How will 5G affect your website?

5G is now available to the people of the UK, well those who live in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester anyway.

5G has been branded a “game changer” by journalists and technology enthusiasts alike, some even reporting that it will pave the way for driver-less cars and lead to surgeons being able to carry out operations remotely.

What is 5G?

The term 5G refers to mobile networks and the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, the G stands for generation, 5G is effectively the fifth generation of mobile data available.

It’s a new technology that nearly all the worlds super powers are looking to take advantage of, no country yet is able to boast nation wide coverage.

What are the benefits of 5G?

The main benefits of 5G are nearly all surrounding the speed improvements the next generation provides, experts believe that 5G could be as much as 100 times faster than out existing 4G network.

This means that there will be a lot less delays when using your device, if any. Our existing 4G networks typically have a delay of around 40-50 milliseconds, with 5G is should be 1 millisecond or less. Now this probably will come as welcome news to everyone, after all no one likes waiting for our favourite videos to load.

You might also notice that your next phone contract will be cheaper, although most of the savings will likely be absorbed by mobile phone networks. The cost of setting up the 5G infrastructure will be huge, but the savings in the long run will be huge alike. Ericsson estimates that the 5G network should enable a 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than 4G.

How to prepare for 5G

Although it’s not thought that the majority of the 5G rollout will happen in the UK until 2020, there are a number of ways businesses can start preparing for the change. If you and your business make the most of the new opportunities 5G offers you could be rewarded with increased market share, better customer experience and improved revenue streams according to Ericsson.

One way your business can make use of the 5G network is by upgrading your website with 4K videos which should load quickly and provide a high quality and crisp image to users. Currently if your website has a video included it’s likely to be slower to load than the rest of the website and could either leave a strange looking blank space in the content or slow down the overall loading of website content.

Another way to take advantage of our new found speedy possibilities is to look into how your business can use augmented reality (AR) to provide a better experience to your clientele. There’s an endless list of opportunities when it comes to using software to add artificial elements to real world images in real time. Can you imagine using your favourite shopping website and being able to virtually try on new clothes in the mirror using your phone or seeing what you might look like with a new hair colour or cut before getting the chop.
